Advisory Board Members
NAFC has a highly educated and professional group of Advisory Board members who bring their vast amounts of fitness and wellness industry experience and knowledge to our organization. Advisory Board members are selected for their individual, professional expertise in their respective practices/specialties, as they relate to purpose, mission and activities of NAFC in the field of health and fitness. Members represent expertise in the fields of Exercise Physiology, Adaptive Physical Education, Medicine, Nursing, and professional Lifestyles and Nutrition Coaching. We are committed to enhancing current fitness certification standards by providing access to a convenient, comprehensive, yet practical and affordable fitness education. The advisory board provides feedback and advice to the Governing Board. All members of the Advisory Board are approved by vote of the Governing Board.
June Chewning BS, MA
June Chewning has been serving in the fitness industry since 1978 as a fitness instructor, personal trainer, master trainer, content creator/provider, education service provider, fitness editor, and domestic and international presenter. She taught elementary physical education for 6 years before completing her Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology and Health Enhancement. She served as an Aquatic Exercise Association Training Specialist for 18 years, edited the AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional Manual and the Aquatic Fitness Research Journal (a peer reviewed professional journal), served on the AEA Research Committee, and worked as an education consultant. She is 2-time recipient of the Contribution to the Aquatic Fitness Industry Global Award. June served as adjunct Faculty at Cincinnati State College 14 years, and has developed several college curriculums and taught many courses for their Health Fitness Technician degree program. She is president and education director for Fitness Learning Systems, an IACET accredited education company developing and providing quality eLearning continuing education and services for the health-fitness industry.
Steve Chewning BSEE
Steve Chewning has over 40 years of experience in computer engineering and information technology. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering. In 2003 Steve was one of the founders of Fitness Learning Systems. FLS produces and distributes interactive online continuing education courses for the Health Fitness industry. Since 2012 Steve has served as the Director of Operation for FLS.
Kristi Smith MBA
Kristi Smith holds an MBA and is an authority on sustainable, healthy growth in organizations and Lean Enterprise implementation. Her focus is in sustainability and scalable growth allowing for stable implementations that are built to last. Kristi has 20 years of results managing people and projects, developing and facilitating training programs, and optimizing business processes and operations.
Greg Salgueiro, MS, RD, LDN
Greg Salgueiro is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian in the State of Rhode Island. Greg began teaching the two-day Nutrition for Professionals course with Dr. Jane Pentz in 2008. He also held the position of the Director of Sports Nutrition for Lifestyle Management Associates and currently is the AASDN-BOC Program Director. Greg has experience in corporate, as well as hospital based, fitness and wellness programming. In the past he has been called upon to lecture on Sports Nutrition and Weight Management for the United States Coast Guard Academy. Greg has performed Sports Nutrition workshops for Division I Collegiate athletic teams and works with local high school and college athletes to help them fuel their bodies for optimal athletic performance.
Greg is also certified through the Cooper Institute as a Health Promotion Director and through Totally Coached as an Intrinsic Coach. Greg is an ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist, an ACSM Certified Advanced Personal Trainer, and possesses a B.S. in Nutritional Sciences from Cornell University. Greg completed his Dietetic Internship at the Bronx VA Medical Center while simultaneously completing his M.S. in Clinical Nutrition at New York University. He also received advanced training at the Human Performance Institute in the Power of Full Engagement and works with clients to optimize human performance through energy management. Greg currently works full-time as the Manager of the Lifestyle Medicine Center and the Women’s Medicine Collaborative for Lifespan.
Michael McElveen, MS, CSCS
Michael McElveen holds a bachelors of science in health science and a master of science in sports medicine. Michael has been instructing the two-day Nutrition for Professionals course with Dr. Jane Pentz since July 2011. Michael has experience working in a variety of settings including hospitals, other non-profit organizations, and in the private setting. He currently serves as the assistant dean of student wellness at Berry College.
Josh Lyons and his wife, Stacy opened their first physical therapy clinic in 2004-Pinnacle Physical Therapy. By 2009 the operation grew to three clinics with nearly 50 employees. In 2009 Josh oversaw the company transition to that of a “medical wellness” company as it adopted the service lines for medical fitness, nutrition, and massage.

Tammy LeBoss writes and edits for the National Association for Fitness Certification (NAFC). Since 1998 Tammy has been instrumental in the successful development of several successful Gyms, Yoga, and Pilates studios. In addition to managing nutrition and training departments, she is a certified Exercise Specialist, Yoga and Pilates teacher, an educator, and a published writer on related health, fitness, anatomy, weight training, and nutrition topics.
Marisol Baltazar Nava

She enjoys participating in several major fitness events all over the world and inspiring fitness professionals to make training sessions enjoyable to guide clients to a life of health and fitness.
Originally from England, Liz has been involved in the fitness industry for over 30 years, 15 years of which has been focused on teaching Pilates.
Having taught various fitness formats over the years, Liz found herself dealing with low back pain, knee issues and a torn shoulder, which continued to drive her deeper into the world of Pilates.

She has immersed herself in rigorous Pilates trainings through NAFC including “The Pilates Coach,” “Bender Training Academy,” and “Balanced Body.” She has spent time working closely with Chiropractors and Physical Therapists while teaching the safe and effective programming she learned through NAFC certifications. She now serves as the NAFC Pilates program director.

Leslee Bender has been in the fitness industry for over 25 years, and has been selected as one of the candidates for 2010 instructor of the year by IDEA. Leslee is the original creator of Safe Pilates, utilizing the Pilates Coach mini ball (now the Bender Ball). Leslee has produced over 25 DVDs illustrating these methods, and has presented in over 20 countries worldwide. Leslee’s certifications are from ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NASM, and she holds a B.A. from the University of Nevada, Reno, and is now enrolled in the Gray Institute GIFT program.
As the original creator of the Bender Ball™ and Bender Method™, Leslee has presented at all of the main fitness conferences throughout the world; including IDEA, IHRSA Club Industry, Sara City, ECA, AFPA, AAAI and many more. Hundreds of clubs have utilized her form of Pilates training where she has integrated her unique Selective Stabilization(tm) methods for taking Pilates training to a whole new level. For these efforts, Leslee is currently nominated for New Mind Body Programmer of the Year for ECA New York.

Dr. MacCloud was paralyzed following a major near-fatal mishap. He overcame his challenges and re-learned how to breath, talk, walk, and regained 60 lbs. of lean body mass. Dr. MacCloud has re-invented himself, and directs his efforts toward developing products and services that have a positive health impact upon his clients. A former NPC National Level Competitor, Vince has held numerous titles including, overall Mr. Nevada and Mr. Las Vegas. Currently, Vince and industry veteran Ryan HornBuckle operate the consulting firm Gerstner and Associates Inc.
Alex Spent over ten years as the Athletic Performance Coordinator for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team where he was part of five NBA championship teams, and is now the Director of Sports Science for the Toronto Raptors…
…of the NBA. Alex joined the Raptors in July 2011 to oversee all athletic training, rehabilitation and strength and conditioning for the franchise.

Dr. Brian Stenzler
Dr. Stenzler is the co-founder of DREAM Wellness and opened DREAM Wellness centers in Pacific Beach and Del Mar in 2006. He has held positions on the Board for the NY Chiropractic Council, including President of Nassau County and was a member of the Executive Board. He is Immediate Past President of the California Chiropractic Association in San Diego and is presently Vice President of the entire State Association, and will begin his tenure as President of the CCA in June 2014.
Dr. Stenzler was named New York Chiropractic Council’s Chiropractor of the Year, receiving the World Chiropractic Alliance’s Outstanding Service Award, and Chiropractic Leadership Alliance’s doctor of the month. Dr. Stenzler was recognized by the American Red Cross for assisting relief workers at Ground Zero following the 9/11 tragedy. His humanitarian efforts continued into San Diego where he served Chiropractic care to the firefighters of the 2007 Firestorm.
Dr. Stenzler is guest speaker at Chiropractic conferences and colleges, and lectures to businesses, schools and civic organizations. He has also been featured on television and radio shows around the country. Dr. Stenzler received the prestigious 2012 Doctor of the Year award from the California Chiropractic Association, San Diego County District.
Dr. Stenzler has been a member of the United States Golf Association’s (USGA) Wellness Team since 2009 serving Chiropractic to golfers participating in the US Open. He serves Chiropractic to many current and retired professional athletes.

RADM McDaniel had a series of assignments which included Chief, Department of Orthopedics, Naval Hospital, Rota, Spain; Acting Commanding Officer and Director of Clinical Services, Naval Hospital, Rota, Spain.
Rear Admiral McDaniel assumed command of Naval Hospital Charleston, South Carolina on 27 July 1988, where he was selected as Rear Admiral in November 1989. In June 1990, he became U.S. Pacific Command Surgeon, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii.
RADM McDaniel’s other activities include Navy Wrestling Champion, Interservice Wrestling Champion, and World Silver Medalist in CISM Games, Rome, Italy in 1974. He has been the National Team Physician for Track and Field World Championship, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in 1976; and Team Physician, World Championship Basketball in Teheran, Iran in 1977; World University Games, Bucharest, Romania in 1981; and for the U.S. Boxing Team, LaPaz, Bolivia in 1982. Rear Admiral McDaniel was also a U.S. Olympic Team physician for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California.

Dr. Brooke Azie-Rentz, ND

Dr. Brooke grew up on the East Coast. She attended the University of New England in Biddeford, ME where she studied Physical Therapy before deciding to go to medical school. After graduating with her B.S. in Medical Health Science, she moved to Seattle in order to attend Bastyr University in 2001. After 4 years of medical school, Dr. Brooke’s plan to move back East was interrupted when she met her future husband, Jashar. Not to mention she had come to love everything the Pacific Northwest had to offer. After working in Redmond for 4 years, Dr. Brooke moved to Sammamish to open her private practice in 2009 before opening Alpine Integrated Medicine in 2011 with her partner Nichole Santoro, LAc.
Always looking to improve her clinical skills, Dr. Brooke continues her studies through additional coursework and by attending medical conferences. In addition, she tries to give back to the profession by mentoring students. In 2009, she was awarded the honor and privilege of supervising one of only two Naturopathic residents chosen nationwide through the STAIR residency program. Dr. Brooke maintains professional memberships with the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) and the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians (WANP).
Dr. Brooke lives in Duvall with her husband, Jashar, two beautiful children, Irie and Bodhi, their dogs and chickens. Although the last couple of years have been more homebound with the babies, Dr. Brooke likes to spend her free time enjoying the great outdoors and spending time with friends.
